Concrete Floors: A futuristic take on an old favourite

Cutting-edge interior design might not immediately bring thoughts of concrete floors to mind. However, with the advent of techniques, such as diamond polishing and specialised coatings, it might come as a surprise that the humble building material is now considered the latest in contemporary chic when it comes to the floor of choice in many interior situations.

The advantages of concrete floors are many, and the time has come to dispel the myth that the substance is only suitable for builder’s yards and the like. In fact, the use of concrete is currently one of the fastest-growing in the flooring industry – and with good reason.

The following discusses the advantages of concrete floors and why builders and designers might want to consider its use for a stylish and avant-garde finish.

The Power of Polishing

Let’s first address what many will see as the multiple issues found when using concrete as a flooring substance. Admittedly, the list is long. It includes the following:

  • Cracks

  • Spalling surfaces

  • Loose/missing aggregate

  • Granules of sand

  • Dust

  • Seams

While these are indeed a challenge, the process of diamond polishing transforms concrete into a stunning, mirror-like surface that’s not only aesthetically pleasing but is also uber-hard wearing.

Metamorphosising a concrete floor into a showpiece takes time, but the finished product can be stunning - not to mention requires minimal aftercare to retain its good looks.

Creating the Perfect Concrete Floor

There are three steps to a beautiful reflective finish for a concrete floor.

  1. The prep: As with any task, the more accurate the preparation, the better the final result. Whether you’re working on an existing concrete floor or one that’s been laid for purpose, the surface will need its first cuts to remove contaminates and get to initial level of exposure you like

This will also ensure the floor is level and all the contaminants have been removed, meaning you can move onto step 2.

  2. Grouting: Not always required but is a step to ensure small pinholes are filled and the surface is nice and smooth

  3. Apply a Hardener : Also known as a densifier, this needs to be either lithium, potassium, or sodium-based. Concrete Hire will guide you through this

  4. Get polishing: Once the hardener has had the relevant time to for the chemical process of densifying to take place, it’s time for the final (and most satisfying) step – diamond polishing. This is carried out in stages, typically from 50 to 3000 grit Depending on the level of gloss finish required this can take anything from three to seven levels of polishing with different degrees of diamond pads. The last step is to apply a Stain Guard to protect the floor.

Concrete Floor Coatings

In some cases it might be applicable to use other types of specialist coatings. There are many on the market.

  • Epoxy coating: These come in various colours and pigments and have the advantage of hiding any blemishes in the concrete. They can also boast anti-slip properties, making them popular in locations such as car workshops or on ramps – both for vehicles and pedestrians. Epoxies can also be decorative, which is achieved by adding tiny pieces of coloured aggregate, quartz or flakes of material added into the wet surface. Such a finish looks fabulous in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and even garages.

Another advantage is that when created in a seamless manner they offer a reliable way to prevent mildew and mould building up in cracks. If also used in conjunction with a monolithic-cove base it offers even more reliable waterproofing in the join between the floor and the walls.

  • Acrylic coating: These coatings reduce the amount of dust that occurs on unfinished concrete floors. Often found in warehouses, such an addition dramatically increases longevity and reduces the need for regular maintenance.

  • Urethane: Such coatings have gone out of fashion somewhat due to their penchant for chipping, discolouration, and peeling. They were used in locations such as car showrooms, warehouses, and aircraft hangars thanks to creating an attractive glossy finish that was easy to clean. Today’s diamond polishing finishes and other choices of coating are often now used in preference to the many oil-modified and chemical-resistant urethane offerings.

Not all concrete floors are suitable for diamond polishing, which is why the above coatings are still commonplace. Older concrete floors might not be hard enough to cope with the rigours of polishing. If unsure it’s always preferable to take expert advice before embarking on a project.
